Planets in Medical Astrology: Uranus
The image associated with Uranus is bolt of electricity coming from the sky and hitting the earth. It seems to come out of nowhere, lasts a fraction of a second and can bring about cataclysmic change. No one can predict where and when the next the bolt will strike. Uranus is therefore seen as erratic, unpredictable, chaotic and a bringer of sudden, unexpected change. However, its erratic and chaotic appearance is only so because the higher order to which Uranus is aligned is veiled from us. Uranus, is in fact, highly logical and rational. What humanity witnesses is only the final phase of the Uranian process when it manifests on the physical plane. The same applies to the body and the apparent sudden and unexpected onset of many illnesses and accidents. The precipitation onto the physical plane may come like a bolt out of the blue but this is only the final stage of what is sometimes quite a lengthy process.
Uranus rulership over electricity also applies to the body and when out of balance can result in arrhythmia of the heart (if aspected to the Sun) and disorders of the nervous system. There is usually a corresponding problem with Saturn which when functioning properly serves to ground the electrical nature of Uranus so that its effects can be ordered and channelled rather than so powerful and chaotic that they leave the individual's nervous system hyper-stimulated and unable to switch-off.
Uranus rules the Aquarian Age and as we advance towards it, the planet will become increasingly active in humanity as a whole. One general effect is having is a speeding up of individual and social evolution. Within the body it is causing changes to the pineal, pituitary and hypothalamus by increasing their level of activation. As these centres in the head receive greater stimulation, endocrine disorders are likely to also increase as many people will be unable to deal with the increased activation in a smooth and graceful way.
This general speeding up of life will also put greater stress on the nervous system, leading to more nervous breakdowns, especially at the Uranus opposition, and psychiatric illness.
Uranus governs higher order regulation of the body. This pertains to the cosmic pulse to which all life must align for true health. Therefore, life is not possible without the influence of Uranus. This includes the timing of signals at various levels hierarchically and across all systems, such as:
Endocrine system
Relates to the higher order control of the thoughts of the Higher self and frontal lobe and pineal gland with the hypothalamus and pituitary. Also the regulation of the Releasing hormones from the hypothalamus ad pituitary glands. In this manner, all the endocrine glands within the body are aligned to the higher subtle bodies.
Nervous system
The thoughts relayed from the spiritual world are able to over-ride the thoughts retained and being replayed within the sphere of the lower self and brain. There must be adequate suppression or inhibition of the nerve signals of the spinal cord (spinal reflexes) by the cerebral brain, otherwise disinhibited behaviour and nerve action results.
Circulatory system
The heart and its nature over-rides and controls the rest of the circulation. Note, how in the embryo, the peripheral blood vessels develop before the heart organ is completed, and blood within these vessels travel in all directions until aligned to the heart. There are also higher order control mechanisms so that blood can be diverted to areas of need during exercise, changes in environmental temperature and during rest (i.e. some arteries vasocontrict, whereas other vasodilate).
Growth & development
Some tissues must be held in check or suppression, whereas others must be stimulated to grow - in order to achieve the correct body size and shape as defined by the Ego image. Without this control of both growth hormone levels and locally acting somatomedins, receptors and tissue response to growth hormone, there would be distorted growth. Furthermore, the physical tissues must not enter a retrograde or default state of embryonic growth, which is the growth of undifferentiated tissue without a higher plan.
Genetics and cellular physiology
There must be the correct switching on and off of the relevant genes for each cell of the body. All cells and their genetics (except cells without nuclei, such as erythrocytes) must become properly differentiated and not take on the form or function of other cell types.
Digestive system
There is not only regulation of the gut by the smooth harmonious flow of liver chi (which is more of a Jupiter quality), but also complex nerve signals and neuroendocrine signals regulating the digestion. An example is the vagus nerve with parasympathetic signals to stimulate peristalsis and increase gut enzyme release. Many of the gut locally acting transmitters and messengers are replicated in the brain. Appetite is controlled by the hypothalamus.
Reproductive system
There is a timing to development of the system and to its functioning. Thus, there must be the correct gender development through the differentiation of the Mullers and Wolfian ducts within the embryo. There must be the correct development of primordial germ cells within the yolk sac and surrounding fetal membranes, with their subsequent migration into the gonadal streaks near the future kidneys. There must be the proper inhibition of adrenal androgen hormones so that abnormal secondary sexual characteristics do not develop prematurely at or soon after birth (as in congenital adrenal hyperplasia). There must be the correct timing for puberty, and its progression - and this is especially related to the functioning of the pineal gland. There must be the correct timing for menopause and the stoppage of germ cell activity at the physical procreative level.
Problems arise when Uranus is disconnected from the rest of the organism. This could then lead to various pathological scenarios:
- The end of life, the soul must depart and the physical-etheric body is no longer sustained, leading to its death (psoric miasm).
- There is technically a death of the physical body, but enough of the etheric body remains to become a shell for habitation of discarnate astral entities and other souls, leading to states of possession (Tubercular miasm).
- The physical-etheric body continues living, but in a state of distortion and one-sidedness, activating the syphilitic miasm. This ultimately leads to self-destruction.
- The physical-etheric body continues living, but overgrows tissues in an undifferentiated manner, not knowing when to stop or transform the cells. This activates the cancer miasm.
Causes of Uranus patterns
Loss of the Uranian signals into the body can occur from the influence of Saturn, e.g. in negative aspect. Saturn leads to obstruction and slowing down of the higher signals.
Disruption of Uranian activity in the body could also occur from negative Venus-Uranus patterns. Venus is the child of Uranus, and governs the kidneys and ability of the body to receive the electrical nature of Uranus (the astral body is electrical in nature). An afflicted Venus can cause a constitutionally weak body, unable to receive and ground the astral body and Uranian energy, leading to either paralysis/weakening of the astral body, or a secondary cramp as the astral body tries to assert itself.
With Uranus problems, there is generally a tendency to one or a mixture of the following patterns of pathology:
- Cramping, spastic or hypertonic states. This is an astral body cramp in that region of the physical, and relates to an attempt by the astral body and higher order information to assert itself again. However, the physical-etheric body is either to weak (e.g. a weak Venus) or too dense/coarse (Saturn) to enable flow of the astral. This latter pattern relates also to the conception of Cyclopes and deformed giants by the misguided Uranus in Greek mythology. Uranus is attempting to re-assert itself within the chart. Consider a positive Mercury-Uranus relationship here.
- Atonic lifeless states, due to the loss of Uranus almost altogether. Here the astral body has practically departed from that part of the physical-etheric body. This is often the case for surgery and mutation of the body, similar to the mutilation of Uranus by Cronos/Saturn. Hence look for Saturn-Uranus patterns, also Pluto for destruction of the body.
Endocrine system
Where Uranus is of weak influence, consider loss of higher hormonal feedback control of the relevant glands. This leads to primary underactivity of the glands, such as secondary hypothyroidism, secondary adrenal cortical deficiency, secondary ovarian failure. The term secondary here refers to the gland shutting down as a consequence of the lack of stimulating hormones from the hypothalamus and/or pituitary glands. Where Uranus attempts to re-assert itself, but the tissues of the bdy have become burnt out, then primary gland deficiency states tend to arise, e.g. primary hypothyroidism. Here the thyroid gland simply does not function, despite receiving the correct (or even greater) levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) from the pituitary gland.
Nervous system
Disinhibited nerve action within the peripheral nerves and spinal cord (also within the limbic system) can lead to spastic paresis (weakness) and out of control contractions of the muscles. This is typical of a lesion within the upper motor neurone. This is the case for multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease (this is also a mixed upper and lower motor problem), stroke damage with ongoing spastic paralysis, ataxic incoordination from cerebellar disease.
Circulatory system
There may be chaos within the heart's conduction system from the sinoatrial node (within the left atrium) to the cardiac muscles, as well as damage to the autonomic nervous system of the heart. Typical diseases are atrial fibrillation and end-states (leading often to sudden cardiac arrest and death) of ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. The patient then needs the higher order control recreated for them by a pacemaker signal (either on-demand pacing or always-on pacing). However, this is ultimately a loss of cosmic alignment for their heart. Consider Sun-Uranus patterns here.
Reproductive system
With weak Uranus there may be chaos and confusion within the embryonic development of the genitalia and gonads, leading to ambiguous genitalia, or to primary infertility with practically complete loss of the gonads (a tiny streak of gonad tissue may be all that is present in the birth body). Look for afflictions also in Moon and Venus for under-developed states, and Mercury for ambiguous and hermaphrodite states.
There may be delayed onset of puberty (e.g. with primary amenorrhoea in a girl) with a weak Uranus. A spastic influence by Uranus (look for influence of Saturn and Pluto-Saturn patterns) may cause premature or precocious puberty with early and excessive development of the genitalia. This is especially the case for boys, and look also for a pineal gland tumour. This could also arise from premature activation of the adrenal androgens (look for a Mars influence here).
A spastic Uranus influence could cause early menopause in women. Either gender could also suffer infertility from a weak Uranus.
Growth and development, cells and genetics
Tissues may become out of synchronicity with each other, leading to cancers, organ failure or distorted growth. Examples include Paget's disease for bones, acromegaly for excessive and deformed growth (after the fusion of the bony growth plates). Cells may switch on genes that are inappropriate to their normal function, e.g. causing cancers, inappropriate secretions or cell products. Examples include Syndrome of inappropriate secretion of Anti-diuretic hormone (SIADH), ectopic hormone secretion causing excessive hormone states such as for some types of phaechromocytoma. Genes may instead switch on inappropriately to alter the anatomy of the cell, e.g. some ovarian teratoma tumours contain hair, bone or teeth etc within the ovaries.
Digestive system
There may be abnormal and excessive peristalsis beyond normal requirements for digestion, e.g. causing irritable bowel syndrome or Crohns disease. There may be excessive and inappropriate stomach acid production as in the case of many peptic ulcers.
Retrograde Uranus
There is a particularly intense pattern of nerve-muscle cramping from the signals becoming delayed or obstructed. The causes can also be attributed to birth trauma, head injury, and epileptic-like fits during the childhood or birth period.
The native may have especially abused the powers of the mind (including of psychic abilities) in past lives, causing their thinking to now become confused, unclear or unable to manifest as action in their lives.
